Coldplay’s ninth studio album was first teased in the booklet of their 2019 album Everyday Life. The original photo was taken in 1934 by photographer J. Allan Cash, which Coldplay replaced the billboard to theirs, and edited a car in with the line “Coldplay Coming Soon.”
The album title’s trademark was registered in 2018, and again in 2020. In December 2020, the band responded to the image in an interview with Virgin Radio:
We don’t know if anybody has understood, that there was picture means something.
In February 2021, a source close to Coldplay has officially confirmed the title.
The album was preceded by the first promotional single from it, “Higher Power,” in May 2021. Two months later it was followed by the album announcement, and the second release—“Coloratura.”
After months of rumors and speculations, in September 2021, Coldplay officially announced that “My Universe” is a collaboration song with BTS and will work as the second promotional single and the third release from the album. The song caught attention of both groups’ fandoms, and the official My Universe – Single CD was sold out worldwide.
